What Do I Order at Five Guys?

 

low-carb-five-guysOne of the hardest parts of adopting a new, healthy way of eating is trying to make it fit in to your lifestyle.  Anyone could eat healthy if they had a private chef at home to cook for them and their family.  What is difficult is trying to stick to something when you are cooking for other people, attending social events, and juggling family activities.

I am very proud of the women I see at baseball tournaments mixing up their protein shakes while the rest of the family is eating hot dogs.  I am not one of those women.

I like food, I like to cook, and I like eating food. Real food!

I am following a low carb diet, trying to eat less than 20 net carbs a day.  The main reason I am low carb is that I am a diabetic.  I have been fighting this diagnosis for a couple of years.  I knew that genetically it was most likely going to happen, but I didn’t think it would happen in my early forties.  I thought I had more time to have fun!   It is really hard to have to admit that I just can’t have foods that I love.  It is one thing to give up sweet tea for a couple of months to lose some weight, but to admit that I cannot have it at all, for the rest of my life is really hard.  I have had to tell myself that carbs are not just making me fat, they are killing me.

So back to the low carb diet.

One of the things I hear people say is that being low carb is just too hard to do when you have to eat away from home.

NOT TRUE!!

You just have to be prepared, and know what you can order that fits in with your lifestyle.

I have an app that I love, called Paleo Go Go.  It isn’t exactly low carb, it is Paleo, but it gives great guidance.

Last night my son wanted Five Guys Burgers and Fries.  This is an easy one!

Any time you go somewhere that has burgers, just order one and ask for no bun or just dump it.

Five Guys is one of those places where they actually offer “burger in a bowl” as an option.  If you ask for lettuce they serve it on top, like a salad.

I was lazy and ordered online.  I ordered my son his cheeseburger and cajun fries, and I ordered a double bacon cheeseburger in a bowl, with jalapeños, grilled onions and grilled mushrooms.

This is what it looked like, and had a total of FOUR CARBS!!!
